Due to an, uh, overwhelming lack of activity on this community for the last few years, I plan on deleting this community account soon. Thanks to everyone who has been a part of this!
Am planning to set up a community with a more generalised focus, on Christianity, literature, and creative writing, at ![[info]](http://p-stat.livejournal.com/img/community.gif) wordsofthecross; while fanfiction will only be a minor focus of this community, it will probably still form part of the discussion. Anyone who is interested in books, writing, and the Christian faith is greatly welcomed. |

| Two for the Price of One |

When you write a story and post it, you really ought to have a title. It's pretty important.
As a writer of fic and maker of fanmixes, I know that coming up with a title is often a difficult task. One wants to be catchy without being trite. Do you really want to use lyrics from that Evanescence song? Is using that one line from Tennyson too overdone? Do you want a really long title or a short title and a longer subtitle? Is that title too revealing?
However this:
Title: Blah blah blah* (not the really title... don't have a title yet)
Makes no sense. Really, even if you use another line from a Shakespearean sonnet, it's got to be better than this.

I love crossovers. I really do. They're not even a guilty pleasure; I freely admit it. I adore seeing how people from different fandoms would interact. How would Sirius Black deal with Captain Jack Sparrow (or Captain Jack Harkness for that matter)? It makes me all happy and excited when it's done well.
However, when you just grab two people from different fandoms and just have them, for no apparent reason and without any apparent explanation, screw each others' brains out or profess their true love... I just sit there and scratch my head. I am a firm believer that any two characters can fall in love, but some characters need a better better back story than others. And when you give no explanation *and* it's a crossover... No. Stop. You might love these characters loving each other, but I really, really need a reason. |

The purpose of fanfiction is not to wave it around in people's faces to show off how much smarter you are than other people.
Frilly obscure words and interesting parallels are one thing. Making the fic so thick with them that it's utterly incomprehensible is another. A common word used interestingly is far more arty than an uncommon word used for the sake of it.
I'm not saying not to use words that your readers will have to look up, but the purpose of fic isn't to beat off with your thesaurus in order to show off how incredibly, irresistibly awesome you are.
Also, using enormous amounts of Russian words where it's neither for effect or because there's no English equivalent to the word is just extremely annoying for those of us who don't speak Russian. You wouldn't accept fangirl Japanese, so quit it. |

Dear Bleach fandom Yes, I know, why haven't I learned my lesson yet?
I doubt that Ichigo or Renji would have hands that are completely smooth and blemish free. They are both swordsmen who are going to have callused hands. The same goes for any of the other Shinigami. Yes, even Yumichika is going to have callused hands, since he is a swordsman. Even Ishida is going to have calluses, since he has to pull back on a bowstring repeatedly. Why are so many characters given perfectly smooth hands in fanfic, as if they haven't lifted a sword in their lives?
This actually applies to any fandom where the characters wield swords, knives, bows, guns etc. Please, think about this before you write. |

Okay, I know I'm asking for it when I go poking around the Harry Potter section on FFN, but this one really, really broke my brain.
Really, the whole thing was just so OOC I nearly cried. I couldn't even finish it. Also, on a completely different note, what's with everybody writing Sirius and Remus doing it on James's bed? They have beds of their own, you know. Yeah, it's funny every now and again, but it's in something like eight out of every ten fics for them. |

(Not a Kirigakure rant, though it is highly relevant to them, hur hur)
Look, so you're writing an older character shacking up with a much younger character. Let's say, she's 14/15 (you know, one of the original genin) and this guy is.... twenty something. So maybe the older character might feel a bit iffy.
But you say he shouldn't because 'She's over the legal age in Japan'
....
The Naruto universe is not Japan. Based off it, yes, but still not Japan.
Anyways, I really don't think they'd have 'Legal ages' in the various countries since the fillers point at a rather unorganized justice system and the manga points to little at all. But as a fanfic writer, you're obviously allowed a bit of your own world building, so you could establish a 'legal age' depending on the various societies.
Personally I always pictured Sand as highly prudish due to the political scene and the need to keep up a good image, buuuuut anyways,
But, when you really think about it, this adult character was no random Konoha nin, he was actually part of a dastardly group of mass murdering terrorists bent on destroying/ruling/whatever the hell they think they're doing to the world.
If you ask me, he really shouldn't be thinking 'Oh, this girl might be jail bait.' I think what would cross his mind is 'is this girl too young for me?'
You know. Less 'Chris Hansen, ohnoes!' and more 'This violates the remaining shreds of decency (I may or may not have as the author sees fit)'.

*sigh* After the unrelated Twilight business, I now happily bring all your attention to something about, you guessed it, Christopher Paolini, EveryOne's Favorite Worst Author Ever. (drumroll, please) He is- (another drumroll, please) Coming To A City Near You. Aren't You Lucky!?!
The Brisingr Tour kicks off September 19 at a Barnes & Noble in New York, as announced on Alagaesia,com. It's weird, though, there are like a dozen sites where he'll be doing the whole presentation and signing thing (hope he gets horrible hand cramps), and I'm no expert but aren't there usually more? And why wouldn't there be one in Chicago? And why, why, WHY, does he look like this:

Talk about Customer Service!
While I was in the Adirondacks, my Wii broke. Stopped being able to read discs, either gamecube or wii. And, of course, it's well outside the warrantee. So I get home, I fill out a report online, I get sent instructions on how to send it to them, as well as a request for a check for $80 (so much cheaper than buying a new wii, and I get to keep all my saved data!). Sent it off. They got in in the mail Tuesday afternoon, and I just got an e-mail from Nintendo saying it's been fixed and is being sent back!
Will update if everything's copacetic when it comes. =) |

So this fic is truckin' along nice and easy, and then we come to a scene change.
"Four days later:
"For four days..."
Four days? Yes? Four? Are you sure? Four days passed? Okay, four. Good. Four. All right.
Furthermore, you don't really need a line divider/horizontal rule/crazy bunch of characters every time you want to change the scene. Phrases just like "four days later" are actually really good at that, and they flow just a teensy bit better than 20 hyphens in a row or a line of ~*~*~*~*~*~ or 0o0o0o0o0o0 or -()-()-()-()- or whatever it is you kids are using these days. Hell, you could even use an extra line break or two to separate your paragraphs. I know it sounds crazy, but it actually makes you look older than twelve. |

Okay I'm relatively new to this ship though not to Harry Potter in general and recently read a fic where the marauders Lily and Snape have to perform Little Red Riding Hood at Hogwarts. From what I remember Malfoy has to be director for the play and Granny (Snape) and Wolfie (Lupin) have some fun and because the play starts boring they conspire to stop Lily and liven it up.
